LOS NENA - self/titled (Nena Discos) Surprisingly great, extremely twisted and oddly diverse post-rock weirdness from this unknown Mexican quintet who include my old pal and former Knitting Factory soundman - Daniel Goldaracena and co-produced by Daniel and another former Knit sound engineer - James McLean. Tight, never ending twists and turns, post-punk, noise/rock, distorted & goofy vocals and tortured guitars - funky bass sections, deconstructed traditional sidetracks, drunken horns appear out of nowhere and short spoken word (radio?) samples. Their bizarre sense of humor makes them all the more endearing. As noisy and as distorted as this gets, Los Nena are relentlessly tight, stopping and starting on a dime, shifting through different sections/genres effortlessly. Ultra demented yet well placed guitar solos erupt through the din and show their craftiness. The cover looks just like a Winter & Winter expensive packaging deal, very strange. We just found a small box of these buried in our dusty psychedelic basement and have less than a dozen copies, so who knows how long they will last!?! Highest Recommendation!!! CD only release for one million pesos or $10.
